Frequently asked questions

Short answers about making, downloading and paying for your family tree. For step-by-step help with pictures, see the guides.

Getting started

Do I need an account to start?

No. Choose Try the editor in the Get started menu to make a family tree in your browser without an account.

When you let Treeshy design your tree, you only enter your email address. The code we send you creates your account at the same time. See Let Treeshy design your family tree.

What is the difference between "Create My Family Tree" and "Try the editor"?

Create My Family Tree asks you a few questions about your family and the look you like, and Treeshy designs the tree for you. You see a free preview before you pay.

Try the editor opens the editor with a ready-made tree, and you arrange everything yourself.

Both are in the Get started menu at the top of every page.

What do I need to make a family tree?

A computer with a web browser, and the names of the people you want to include. Birth and death years and photos are nice to have, but not required.

If your family tree is already in a genealogy program, export it as a GEDCOM file and import it instead of typing every name.

I bought a design on Etsy. How do I use it?

Your Etsy order comes with a link. Open it, enter your email address and the 6-digit code from our email.

The page Your designs shows how many designs your order includes, how many are left and until when the link is valid. Your order also gives you the Individual plan for that time, so you can edit your design in the editor.

Not ordered yet? You can order a design on Etsy or browse our Etsy shop. Etsy Purchase Protection covers your order: if something goes wrong with an eligible order, you get a full refund.

Using the editor

Is my work saved?

Yes, by itself.

  • In the free editor, your work is kept in this web browser only. The note at the bottom says Saved in this browser. Other computers do not see it, and clearing your browser data removes it.
  • In your own projects, Treeshy saves your work to your account, so you can open it on any computer.

Changes to a person still need Save in the Person actions panel.

Can I keep a tree I made in the free editor?

Yes. Subscribe from the same browser, and Treeshy adds the tree from the free editor to your projects. See Plans and payments.

My imported names show the family name first. Can I change that?

Yes. Treeshy shows the family name first, for example Hartley Thomas. Click the card, change Name as it should appear and press Save.

If a card has no name at all, your program may store names in a way Treeshy cannot read. Type the name on the card. See Import a family tree file.

Long names do not fit on the cards. What can I do?

Make the cards wider. Press the gear button, open Node layout and frame and move the WIDTH slider to the right. Then press Center content.

You can also choose a smaller Font size under Text settings.

Can I add photos?

Yes. Click a person card, press Upload image, choose a photo and press Save. See People and photos.

In the free editor, photos stay in your browser. In your own projects, they are saved to your account.

How do I change the look of every card at once?

Press the gear button and open Node layout and frame. Under Card layout, click a style such as Victorian card or Golden laurel. Every card takes that style.

Colors, fonts and frames shows the font, color and background settings too.

Downloading and printing

How do I download my family tree?

It depends on how you made it:

  • In your own projects, press Download in the toolbar, choose your print size, then press Start export. Treeshy emails you the link to a print-ready PDF. See Download and print your design.
  • After buying a design Treeshy made for you, press Download my family tree on the page after payment, or use the link in your email.
  • The free editor has no Download button. Choose a plan to download a tree you made there.

What file do I get?

A print-ready PDF without a watermark. Downloads from your projects come as a ZIP file that holds the PDF.

Downloads from your projects also wait with the project on My projects for 24 hours, up to 5 per project.

Can Treeshy print and frame it for me?

When printed posters are offered, yes: choose Digital + Printed, Framed on your preview page, or Order a print on a project card on My projects. Treeshy prints your design on matte art paper, frames it if you like, and sends it to your door, with the PDF included.

You can always take the PDF to any print shop instead, and tell them the size you chose.

Plans and payments

Which option should I choose?

  • Just download your design to pay once for a print-ready file of the design Treeshy made for you with the form, exactly as previewed.
  • Individual subscription to change names, photos and the template whenever you like, keep up to 10 projects and download print-ready files.
  • Professional subscription if you make family trees for other people.

Compare them on For individuals and For professionals, and read Plans and payments.

What are AI credits?

Treeshy uses AI credits when it designs a tree or artwork for you. Each paid month or year of a subscription adds credits, and credits you do not use stay in your balance. Your Profile shows how many you have, and with an active plan you can buy more there.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Open Account → Profile and press Manage billing. On Stripe’s billing page, cancel your subscription. Your plan keeps working until the end of the period you paid for.

What happens to my projects when my plan ends?

They stay in your account. To open them in the editor again, subscribe again from your Profile or from My projects.

How do I pay, and is it safe?

Payments go through Stripe’s secure payment page, and Treeshy never sees your card number. Have a promo code? Type it on the payment page.

You can also order a design on Etsy and pay there; it works like a month of the Individual plan. Etsy Purchase Protection covers your order: if something goes wrong with an eligible order, you get a full refund.

Your account and privacy

I never chose a password. How do I sign in?

If Treeshy designed your tree, your account was created with the 6-digit code, without a password. On the sign-in page, press Forgot password?, enter your email and choose a password from the link we send you.

I forgot my password.

Press Forgot password? on the sign-in page, type your email and press Send link. Open our email within one hour and choose a new password. See Your account.

Can I change my email address?

Your Profile shows your email address, but it cannot be changed there. Write to us from the address you want to keep, and we will help.

How do I delete my account?

Open Account → Profile and press Delete account under Danger zone. This removes your account and your projects and cannot be undone.

If you have a subscription, deleting your account ends it at once, with no refund for the rest of the period.

Who can see my family tree?

Your projects are private to your account. Photos you add in the free editor stay in your own web browser. Read our privacy policy for the details.
